Most people will argue that copyright is a law to protect artists and has nothing to do with perception, but this is just half the truth. This post will shed some light about common misconceptions*.
First off, this topic came up in a conversation about copyright, artwork licensing and a debate on how to solve issues with a client. Actually the essence of my thoughts are packed into the following post.
To begin with, I´d like to state that I´m an artist and have a sincere interest to protect my work as much as anyone else, but I don´t trust copyright or Creative Commons for that matter, the lines are too blurry and the jurisdiction is often very incomprehensible.

Dust the FilmIf you've been following me on Facebook or Twitter you probably know by now that I've been working on a really cool short film called Dust. Which is being done by Ember Lab, a small yet passionate VFX studio. They hired me to do some of the creature concepts. (Thank you Kickstarter!)
These are concepts for the Hydra. Although very small in size the Hydra plays an important role in the film. As is the case with all the creatures in this film, the Hydra is based on organisms that actually exist in nature. The goal was to reference as many natural elements as possible as we developed the unique creatures in Dust. More creatures will be coming shortly

Instead of publishing vol. 2 separately, I revised vol. 1 and expanded it with all the strips that woud have gone in the second: a total of 55 gags over 308 pages. One major change is that each gag is labelled with the place where I observed it (though many were observed in several places.) To make the most of the e-book format, every frame has been checked to achieve a quasi-animated effect as you flip the pages on your reading device. The popular Arabic treatment is still included: lock your device's screen rotation and flip it over to read in Arabic! Looks great both on iPad and iPhone (and the like.)

Random MusingsYou know what character I've always wanted to draw correctly but never could? Jasmine from Aladdin. No matter how many times I've tried, studying the character, the animation, etc... I just can't do it right. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
For that matter I wish I had a more disney-seque style of drawing. I think you can see some Mickey Mouse and Bone inspirations in my shorter cartoony characters like Spot or Talus... but when it comes to human beings I have a very hard time moving away from my Rumiko Takahashi roots. I really envy some of my fellow artists here on DA who have gorgeous linework and character designs, especially in the realm of the face. I've tried but, like Jasmine, I struggle.
When I get Super Mario 3D Land for my 3DS, you can probably expect to see a lot of fanart of characters running around with Tanookie tails. I friggin' LOVED the leaf powerup in Super Mario Bros 3 and it's been damn close to 20 years since it's been in a new Mario game.

This quote is so important that we forget about the meaning from time to time, I´m glad someone mentioned on twitter the link to a Milton Glaser speech about the fear of failure.

In this Video below he describes the process of failure which seems to be contradictory to professionalism as an important asset for creative people.

He encourages to embrace failure and that by transgression an artist can develop a unique style that leads to a unique selling proposition.

In a world where everyone guesses that everything is already invented, the only way to find a niche is to allow, even embrace - failure.

In my opinion its important to be careful with the experimentation and failure part and its something that needs to be kept like a secret behind a curtain sometimes. The reason is simply that the public or target audience want to see results and repeated success stories. And its important striving to see how other artists have become a success through failure to find inspiration, but if it comes to the unique selling proposition - this should never be the main topic of any conversation.

I have written about the many disciplines an artist has to master and like a big company like Coca Cola or Sony or Google have laboratories and special departments to find new ways of making things, any artist should spend some time in the lab.

I highly recommend to read "Ten things I learned" from Milton Glaser´s page as part of AIGA talk from November 2001, very good insights about the industry and creative professionalism.

Thats a great editorial... thanks for it, I will recommend this video for sure. I know lots of artists that choose an indiviudla path and develop that for the rest of their lives without knowing if they could do anything else. I see it as a self imposed limitation, something arbitrary.
