This one is my tribute to a photographer Horst P. Horst, who has made this origin a popular fashion photograph.
Read my current blog post for more infos about it: fantasiox.blogspot.com/2010/01…

Here´s a look on the original of the above: Broken and fixed 09 original by fantasio

Sad there is no Mixed media category that describes work done digitally and traditionally.

This one would fit in there as a digital collage, the reference was a Poser -model and the corsage (done by tolllkirsche ) is photographed and painted together digitally, then printed out and cut into pieces, which then where again put together as collage and hands on traditional for the finish and painting.

Finally the shelf and the band were added to the canvas which was then photographed and worked over in Photoshop to be reduced into duotone to get closer to the one its inspired from.

here some other parts of the broken and fixed series:

Your best pictures are in my opinion the ones which are more discreetly coloured, earthy tones. The brightly coloured immediately signal fantasy rather than imagination so to speak, that is more clichéed motifs and a sense of illustration rather than illusion, although very well done. Others, such as this one is more illusive and suggestive, very accomplished work!

I like this very much, but a little puzzled as to the reason for the position of the shelf, it seems the model has slid down from it.

As for the positioning I was not so creative and placed it according to the composition of the original creation.

Ah, naturally, it was a hommage to an existing picture, I did click to see it but obviously didn't look very closely, my bad. :)

One of my favorite photos of all time. HPH is one of my role models and you did a marvelous homage to him.

I'm surprised you chose the digitally altered photo as the finished piece. It certainly looks lovely, but why not alter the color of the shelf by hand and present it as a mixed media assemblage? Do you concider them two seperate works of art now, or do you trash the object now that you have the digital image?

First i have to say the shelf and everything is painted by hand like you can see on the linked thumbnail in the description, which is nice to be experiment and to separate this contribution as my own in comparison to the original creator.

On the other hand the process from digital to traditional back to digital is by far more intriguing and gives me more possibilities of refinement than to leave things traditional.

thats fabulous. the process.. is it painted over the pieces, or are they printed and cut and placed 'mosaic' style?
I love the progression over the years, the shelf is brilliant.

Thank you! Its both, cut out and a mosaic-like recreation and then painted over the background with acrylics and the foreground with transparent colors and physical airbrush.

Awesome! Horst is one of my favourites. At first I thought you worked over the real image but then I red the description and I was very surprised. Very three-dimensional, I like it.

Is there a chance we could see an "Electric Beauty" in future? ;)

Thank you, it was important to me, to NOT work over an existing image! Everything is recreated from scratch;-)

What do you mean with "electric beauty?

Oh man, how much I envy you when you create such things :P

I promised myself years ago to work more in mixed media (digital/traditional) but I'm a lazy ass :(

Looks great mate! I don't know if I prefer the original colour version more but this is fantastic! :D

thanks mate!
well, the colored version ran a little out of my boundaries but looks a little like early handcolored photographs -do from this point it fits again;-)

I know how that goes with self promised things, i wanted to finish that piece earlier last year:P but with one mixed media piece a year its still within a possible amount for me

One per year... I think I second that :D, although I didn't make any in 2009, so that means I have to make two during this year. I hope I will! :P
