Abandoned Iron Giant At Lake In Swiss Mountains by fantasio Abandoned Iron Giant At Lake In Swiss Mountains by fantasio
Full view is duty!

Explanation below: please read !!

The landscape is originally a painting from Aleksey Savrasov - check out his amazing work: www.wikiart.org/en/aleksey-sav…
The robot is from the movie The Iron Giant by Warner Bros.

The landscape work is in Public Domain, according to: www.wikiart.org/en/aleksey-sav…
What does that mean? fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/…

The whole piece had to be reinterpreted (or better said, it is completely re-painted in Photoshop) as the reference image from the landscape was only available in a very low resolution, thats why it may differ a bit. Also painting the Iron giant in a way it looks abandoned and overgrown was a fun part.

Why did I do that?
Actually the intention behind this is to learn from the old masters, I don´t want to limit myself to mastercopies - but something new inspired by the old AND the new.

This is part of a study-series, called "Ancient Kaiju project" (Iron Giant is probably not a Kaiju, but it certainly fits the scheme of big things)

I like popculture and I love traditional art, so this project came naturally to me.

If you want it as a wallpaper, feel free to hit the download-button to get the 1900x1000 px version.

cheers,
fant

He always rebuilds himself, so the missing arm is the ONLY thing about this that bothers me.

Good observation. But then again I´d rather shed some light on the philosophical side of things, ie.: what if he had lost his will to rebuild himself because an important part is missing -> symbolized by the other arm that suggests he is waiting for Hogarth

I never thought about that...
Also, I didn't need my heart anyways...

On the bottom left it says "Ancient Kaiju Project" is that a reference to Pacific Rim?

Kaiju refers to big monster, but there are two that actually were inspired by Pacific Rim, this:

yes he looks similar to the robots from Laputa and initially I wanted to paint on of them (they have this one arm that is very distinctive) However, for this one - the story of the iron giant clashed much better with the scene imo

Hey thanks! No plans on prints online, the situation around copyright and public domain is really a terrain I don´t want to mess with.

I think the coolest thing about this isn't its actual quality(which, don't get me wrong, is certainly nothing to scoff at) but how it could actually fit into the ending of the movie. It's easy to imagine this as a final epilogue/parting shot of the film; it may have taken thousands of years but the giant is finally about to be whole again. Makes it that little bit more touching.

very awesome. the only thing that would have made it better would be if you drew in that piece that the little boy had at the end of the movie that took off rolling. as if you finished the movie of him adding that part.
